The performing arts bring together people from a lot of different backgrounds with a lot of different interests. Here in the area of theater and in music, we have plenty of opportunities for people who are seeking to further their own, perhaps careers, or simply to participate for the sort of enjoyment they get from being around others and working together, and putting together very special performances.
Students can major in music. We have music, education, music, performance, and just a general music degree. We also have a theater degree, but we also invite students just to participate in choir and band and theater. All our programs are at different times. So it gives the students the opportunity to be in anything they want to in the performing arts.
Students coming to the University of Jamestown have the opportunity to participate in our speech and debate program, which can be a great enhancement to their own field, even if that's not their area of specialty. Every profession that is studied and pursued here at the University of Jamestown needs good communicators, people are able to stand up for their own values, their own opinions, and their ability to persuade others.
We provide scholarships in all our creative areas. So with speech and debate and choir and band and theater, we provide a participation scholarship, because we understand that students aren't just here on a career path. They're also here because they have certain activities that they're interested in.
I really, really enjoyed being in the performing arts. Not only is it welcoming, but it adds a whole new perspective into music, into teaching, into being in a collective group where you can create something where you can come in for each class and just be around creating music with fellow classmates and making a lot of friends along the way.
